1. How does your company collect data onboard the vessel / fleet?
Our crew collects data mainly manually. A computer may be used for entering, storing and transferring the data.
We have an automated process for data-collection. Our ship systems are generally connected to an automated data collection platform that transfers the data onshore to a cloud service
2. What is the main purpose for using the collected data in your company?
To have a periodic awareness of the vessels route and location
To have visibility to operations in real time
To manage operations in real time
To plan and simulate future scenarios allowing machine learning and AI to make most decision
We don’t have data which we can utilize
3. How does your company analyse the data collected onboard the vessels?
Data is analysed mainly by human personnel regularly or on-demand
Data is analysed automatically in real time using cloud-based technologies and machine learning
We don’t properly analyse the data
4. How are the decisions in shipping operations made in your company?
The captain and the onboard crew make decisions based on their own observations and experience
Onshore personnel analyse the noon report and if action is needed, contact the onboard crew
Onshore personnel analyse the raw collected data and share insights with onboard crew who can then make decisions accordingly
Key personnel are able to make decisions real time based on collected data that has been automatically processed, enriched and visualized in a cloud service
Data analysis, decision making and implementation of decisions are all automated and driven by artificial intelligence
5. Which statements describe your company’s current operations best?
Generally the availability and use of data is very low or non-existent
The consistency and the quality of the collected data is low
Onshore and onboard personnel have the same visibility to the collected data
Onshore personnel spend lot of time to analyse the raw collected data from ships
Individual vessel and its sailing conditions are modelled by using machine learning methodologies
The humans review AI -based suggestions and make decision based on these
The humans act mainly as supervisors instead of active operators making decisions
6. What are your company’s’ competences and resources related to data and analytics?
Generally very little or low availability of data analytics skills in the organization
Some professional data analysts developing insight from the collected raw data
Most of data processing automatically performed in the cloud service while analysts concentrating more on applying the insight provided to make right decisions
Human expertise needed mostly only in supervising the systems and the decisions made by artificial intelligence
7. Overall, what does your company expect to achieve by collecting and analyzing data?
(you can select several options)
We want to improve the safety of operations
We want to improve the efficiency of our vessels and reduce fuel consumption
We need the data for regulatory purposes and want to ease the reporting burden of our crew
We want to benchmark performance across the vessels or industry-averages to enable continuous improvements
We want to improve our voyage and route planning
We want to improve the performance of our assets (eg. engines, hull, propulsion)
We want to improve communication and cooperation between onshore and onboard personnel
We want to get real-time information and insight to enable data-based decision-making
We want to ensure our competitiveness
We are afraid of leaving behind and missing out
We are not sure what we should do with the collected data
